LIBS – Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Lumo Analytics offers LIBS – the most advanced on-site drill core analysis solution capable of conducting elemental and mineral analysis providing instant results to support core logging in operating mine sites and ore exploration.

What is LIBS?

What is LIBS?

Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is a rapid, non-destructive technique that uses a high-energy laser pulse to ablate a small spot on a rock surface. This pulse creates a short-lived plasma — an extremely hot, glowing gas where the atoms and ions of the sample are excited. As the plasma cools, it emits light at wavelengths characteristic of the elements present. The resulting spectral “fingerprint” gives instantaneous chemical information about the material.

Because each mineral has a unique spectral pattern, LIBS can not only identify elemental composition in real time, but also classify materials — for example, distinguishing among different minerals in drill cores. For the mining sector, this means faster geochemical insights directly at the source, enabling more efficient exploration and resource evaluation.

Periodic table of elements that LIBS can detect

Elements that LIBS can detect

LIBS is especially effective for light elements (atomic number below 12).

At Lumo Analytics, we have detected and identified over 30 elements using reference mineral samples.

Minerals that LIBS can identify

We maintain a library of over 150 minerals.

For example:

Lithium minerals: Spodumene, Montebrasite, Lepidolite
Sulphides: Pyrite, Chalcopyrite, Pentlandite
Oxides: Hematite, Rutile, Chromite
Silicates: Feldspars, Tourmaline, Beryl
Carbonates: Calcite, Dolomite, Siderite

Regional exploration

Our scanner works well even with hand samples and unconsolidated materials (e.g. till samples). Use it to collect data and identify where to drill next.

Target evaluation

With turnaround time of just hours, you can determine whether your drilling rig is in the right place and plan your next drill hole in the optimal direction.

Resource evaluation

Understanding rock composition lets you perform targeted sampling for laboratory assays.

Feasibility study

Better geological knowledge and understanding of your deposit yields more accurate mine planning and process optimization.

Mining

Scanning drill cores enhances block modeling and extraction planning. It also enables the processing plant to receive precise feed composition data.

Waste characterization

By understanding elemental and mineralogical makeup of your deposits, you can evaluate recyclability and reuse of waste rock and tailings.
